Abstract Iris

This amazing first in a set of three by Sandra Wyman will draw you in to its intriguing centre as you follow the lines from the edges of the piece.

Sandra said, "This is the result of a challenge with a quilting friemd in which we used a photograph of an iris as inspiration for a small art quilt.  I was fascinated by the patterns in the middle of the iris.

Hand-dyed fabrics, raw-edge appliqué, free-machine quilting."

No Two Leaves are the Same

The third in this selection from Sanddra Wyman, this little quilt will add sparkle to its surroundings.  Sandra said it was "Inspired by observational drawings I made of leaves and by Matisse papercuts.

I cut up a larger piece which used improvised log cabin in hand-dyed fabrics and am incorporating the pieces into a series of quilts based on plants and animals.  Other hand-dyed fabrics added, including the leaves.  Raw edge appliqué, machine stitching and quilting."

I Know Where the Red Fern Grows

The second of the trilogy by Sandra Wyman, this striking fern will add pizzazz and glamour to its setting.

Sandra commented, "Yet another in my fern series.  Inspired by the title of a book.

Hand-dyed poplin on monoprinted cotton sateen.

Appliqué - edges stitched with deliberately uneven free-machine zigzag to give and "edgy" finish; free-machine quilted."

Fractured Flower

This striking work by Khurshid Bamboat will look stunning wherever you put it.

Khurshid explained, "I had taken a photograph of a flower, manipulated it with Photoshop Elements and then printed it on cotton using a transfer paper.  It was sliced up and then re arranged, like a mosaic, and bonded on to a background fabric (the reverse has been printed using a thermofax) and machine embellished/quilted."

Santa's Sleigh

My own design (I love Christmas!)  Freehand longarm quilting on my APQS Millennium machine.

This delightful piece from Ani Catt will look stunning in any setting.  It's simplicity and clean lines draw your eyes in to the intricate design in the centre where you will find something new at every twist and turn.

Unfinished - Pots 1

By Regan Purcell, our Region 2 'In The Spotlight' nominee for last year at Festival of Quilts, this charming study will enhance any setting you choose for it.

Regan said, "Last year The Guild kindly featured a piece of my work in their "In The Spotlight".  The theme was the Underground and I am proud to say that it is still featured on the London  Underground Tumbler website.

I have been writing regularly for the magazine "Popular Patchwork" for ten years and have been teaching several classes for the last five years.

For this piece I painted the background fabric and flower pots using Procian dyes, fabric crayons and arylics.  Then using scraps of fabric, first backed with fusible Vilene, I cut flowers and leaves.  These were then free motion embroidered and quilted to create the project."

Because I Love Shiny Fabrics and Feathers - 1

This wonderful little wholecloth by Kay Bell is simply stunning in the way it catches the light as it moves.  A beautiful little quilt which will adorn any surface with grace and charm.

Because I Love Shiny Fabrics and Feathers - 2

Kay Bell has worked more magic with this delightful little quilt.  Slightly bigger than its partner "Because I love Shiny Fabrics and Feathers-1", this beautiful study in blue shimmers with life and would look amazing in any setting.

Not for the Quilt Police New York Beauty

By Judi Mendelssohn, this striking little quilt is full of surprises - from the minute piping to the perfect compass points.  The curves in the checked upper part are the ideal foil to the sharpness of the points inside the arc.  It will be a welcome addition to your decor whatever the setting.

Judi wrote of it, "One of my favourite classes to teach is New York Beauty. To make one vaguely A4 size I simply drew an arc and put points in it. Fabrics mostly from upcycled shirts. Difficult to see but the part I am most proud of is the tiny piping round the outer edge of the arc!"

A study in Green

This wonderfully cool piece by Karen Farmer will enhance any setting in which it is installed.  Karen has made excellent use of colour of form to create an exciting mood with her quilt full of contrasts.

Study in Green - 2

Another piece by Karen Farmer which will look good in any room.  Use of colour and line has given it a real depth and the faintly drawn curves add an ethereal effect which is amazingly simple yet so stylish.

Simple Circle

Made by Stephanie Pettengell, this stunning piece called 'Simple Circle' is composed of stitched feathers.

Free machine quilted on black fabric with gold silk thread.

One design of various stitched circles made for a 3D piece in 2013.

Ivy Fence with Ball

A memory of my dog Pepper who loved playing 'cricket in the garden'...in which I bowled the ball and she jumped and caught it.  Her lonely blue ball lays waiting for another 'friend' to come and play.

Techniques:  Free machine sketch of ivy leaves and grass on to whole cloth.  Then working into the piece with coloured pencil and felt tip.  The ball is applied to felt and separately stitched invisibly to the background; the edge left free to add dimension.

Sandy Snowden has caught the mood so perfectly in this piece.

Some of the 140!

A beautifully made miniature quilt by Margaret Armstrong, specially for The Quilters' Guild.  Margaret said,

"A packet of papers for miniature blocks and a pile of scraps started me off.  140 blocks later I called a halt! 84 blocks were made into a single bed quilt, some blocks were used for cards, but there were still several left.  This little quilt has reduced the pile still further!"

From Jacket to Wallhanging

By Jan Tillett,  you will love the strking colours and wonderful texture of this wonderful piece.  It positively sings to you!

Jan said, "This small quilt is made from the leftovers of two larger projects - a wallhanging and a jacket.

The coloured panels have been created from a Rosenberg and Son Italian cotton which has been stitched on to shrink polyester to enhance the pattern with texture.  The black quilted sashing was made for one of the jackets I created for the Festival of Quilts fashion show."

Red Tree

by Cas Holmes

Red Tree looks at the trees in my native Norfolk landscape and marks the remembrance of 100 years since many of the men (and women) went to war.

Memories of India

The inspiration for this piece was the colours.  It is India in fabric.  My favourite country.  It reminds me of then beautiful sunrises.

"I live on the west coast of Wales and twenty miles inland from my home are the beautiful Cambrian Mountains.  I love visiting the area on a September evening when the colours are truly fantastic and at their best as the sun goes down.

The standing stones are peaceful and strong.

The Mountains are one of my favourite locations and I am now able to share a little piece of it with you."

Something for the Weekend?

On the few Sundays when I'm not away teaching, I like to shut myself in the sewing room and make a little thing 'just for me'. It can easily be combined with interruptions for cooking etc. and it's a great change from the bigger quilts I usually make, that take more concentration and longer spells without disturbance.

From the wonderfully humorous talents of Anja Townrow, this little work of art sings with life!

Catharanthus

This small quilt was inspired by a trip to the glass houses at Kew Gardens.  Lesley says, "I have used my favourite monoprinting techniques combined with free motion quilting and machine embroidery stitching.  The Paints used are acrylics and silk paints."

Marjorelle Blue - Part 3

"These are genuine UFOs cut from a large quilt which I was making a few years ago after a visit to Morocco.  Inspiration was the Marjorelle gardens in Marrakech, once owned by Yves St Laurent.  The Quilt was named after the vivid blue colour which the original owner, artist Jacques Marjorelle, painted his villa-studio.

I worked on the quilt for weeks but couldn't quite get it to 'gel' so decided to cut it up and rearrange it, which didn't work either!  It has been in a drawer ever since and I thought if I cut it up again someone might see potential in it.  There are lots of exotic plants in the gardens and white painted stucco on the villa.  I have used hand dyed cotton fabric, polyester sheers with free machine stitching for the greenery, and Evolon Soft, hand cut into Islamic patterns and appliquéd by machine."                           PaulineBarnes 2014

The photo which is attached to the back is one of many which Pauline took of the gardens and was the main inspiration for the quilt.

Chinese Teahouse

This charming piece by Gail Lawther is really cool!

When I asked for a description, this is what Gail sent me:-

"The Willow Pattern design is eternally appealing, and a few years ago I created a set of six patterns inspired by this ancient tale of doomed young love:

Two bluebirds flying high,

a little vessel passing by.

A bridge with three men, never four;

a weeping willow hanging o'er.

A Chinese teahouse, there it stands,

built upon the river sands;

an apple tree, with apples on –

a crooked fence to end my song.

The technique is my 'signature' Stained Glass Patchwork, using fusible bias binding; for the background I used a brocade tablecloth bought from a bargain linen shop, and many of the fabrics are Hungarian blue-and-white print cottons. "

Garden Gate

This charming little quilt by Dilys Fronks will be a wonderful talking piece when you get it home!

Here's what Dilys said about it.  "A garden was designed and constructed using overlapping-strips of ready bonded fabrics cut with a fluted rotary cutter.  Machine quilting and texturing helps to hold the bonded fabrics in place and adds visual interest.  The gate was sewn on top using a machine satin stitch."

In addition to the quilt, you will also receive the pencil drawing from which Dilys worked!

Tip Field

Another wonderful work of art by Annabel Rainbow. This is how Annabel described it.

A sample piece for a larger quilt/installation being worked on at the moment.  The work is inspired by a field, just down by the river, under the railway line, past the sewerage works, and the corporation tip!  Applique stitch, minimal acrylic paint.

I don't think it will say unsold for long - it's such a pretty piece!

Not Forgotten

by Christine Chester

As my father progressed more into the silence of dementia, there were things about his identity that he never forgot. Despite years of being landlocked, he was always a fisherman, constantly worrying my mother in his later years by his requests to check that everything was ok with his shed, nets and boat - gone long ago. These layers can be seen within this piece.

Oh - and of course, although my father died 2 years ago, he is 'not forgotten' by any means.

Unfini-shed

by Gwenfai Rees Griffiths, this colourfully wonderful piece of art will make your room glow with pride! Gwenfai said, " I'm a traditionalist at heart, with no desire to replicate old quilts.  I aspire to create a new look from the traditional using any technique required; invariably I finish with hand quilting.  There is never a meaningful reason to any of my quilts, I make them because I want to and enjoy every aspect, from the designing to the final stitch, however long that takes.  Quilting is a great outlet for creative expression.

I exhibit and compete internationally and have been fortunate enough to win several awards here and abroad.  I enjoy the challenge of this; it's an excellent way to stretch designing and sewing skills.

I pass on my obsession by teaching several classes locally in North Wales and am often invited to visit groups.

The quilting design on this little wholecloth is taken from one of the carved wooden panels on my Victorian bed.  I've used it several times for small wholecloths and for appliqué A4 quilts.  There are some great carvings on the wardrobe as well which I've yet to use.  To give it a bit more of a contemporary look I decided to use fabric from Farbstoff by Heidi Stol Weber which I bought at Festival of Quilts. Handquilted using King Tut thread and some whip stitch to emphasize the shapes.

Gwenfai has generously also gifted you, the buyer,  some fabric for the binding, a label and a packet of her lovely postcards.

Scraps Rule!

This delightful little quilt by Katharine Guerrier will make a welcome addition to any colour scheme you have in your home.

Katharine has been making quilts and embroideries since 1980.  She trained at Camberwell School of Art in London and worked for some years as a teacher. Further courses in textiles followed.  Katharine's work has been featured in various magazines both British and American and in her own published books.  She is a regular contributor to current local and national quilt exhibitions; most recently in  'The Festival of Quilts' from its inception up until the present day.  In 2007 she hosted her own gallery space at the Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

She is still active on the teaching circuit in the UK and in March 2007, her tenth book 'Scrap Quilt Sensation' was published by David and Charles.

Katharine's work draws on the traditional motifs of pieced patchwork, developing them to give a contemporary feel.  An interest in all the Decorative Arts is the motivation which provides the incentive to enable students to create textiles which are both original and collectable.

Daisy

by Maryke Phillips

I have been a Quilters' Guild member since I learnt they existed which was when I studied for my City and Guilds. I have been obsessed with fabric, stitch, threads, felts and beads ever since. I  have made a Little Gem, a pennant for patchworkers and now an unfinished. This has been the hardest to part with as it is unfinished. I so wanted to embellish it with beads around the edge which is what I usually do.

I hope if you fall in love with Daisy you will enjoy it, love it, stroke it and place it where you can see it. It will be good therapy for you and will raise money for the Quilters' Guild to continue their sterling work.

I was inspired to make Daisy using techniques I use in my fabric stitch books. It was printed using a wooden Indian printing block, stitched using lazy daisy stitch using variegated hand dyed threads, embellished with shisha mirrors and stitch on hand dyed felt
