Stepping Out
Made for a Region 13 Quiltfest
for the "Towards the Light" challenge in 2022.
The journey starts at the centre of the quilt.
Strips form the steps leading outwards 'Towards the Light’,
sometimes they are dull,
others are bright as they grow wider.
We all hope for a brighter time ahead.

Improv Crosses
Made for a chairman's challenge for Norfolk Quilters. Black, white and one other colour. The crosses are free cut, no ruler, with a rotary cutter, it's a technique I enjoy.

My Favourite Artist
I had a problem with this as my favourite artists are textile people. Yoshiko Jinzensi, Gwen Marston, Kathleen Loomis, Cindy Grisdela and Erin Wilson and I wasn't sure if that would be in the spirit of the challenge. So I spent an instructive half an hour online researching artists who use stripes and came up with 8 names whose work I found interesting: Annie Albers, Karl Benjamin, Paul Klee, Bridget Riley, Mark Rothko, Sean Scully, Frank Stella, Victor Vasareli.
Having looked at their work I thought I would put together some stripes where the juxtaposition of colours interested me, so not really influenced by only one artist I'm afraid!

This piece was created to celebrate a birthday for Dart Quilters some years ago. Made by Jeanne Stetson from Torquay, Jeanne is well known around Devon as she taught there for over 25 years. She wonders how she ever managed all those classes each week in term time!

Bits and Bobs
This is the 4th quilt sent in by Mary Mayne. It shows a few patchwork techniques with the boatman just below centre adding a peaceful air to the work. The outer border truly describes Mary!

Christmas in August?
Another beautiful piece from Mary Mayne. With buttons, sequins and embroidery, this is just amazing. The inscription near the bottom reads "Snowflakes are winter's kisses from Heaven". If you are after a charming gift for a friend and would like to finish it off for them then this is the answer.
13" x 9"

Dutch miniquilts
These blocks were foundation pieced from a set of Dutch stencils. They were fun to make, especially adding the sequin embellishment for the eyes and ladybird spots. If I were to finish it now, I would separate the blocks with a narrow sashing and setting squares and then finish with a foundation pieced border; maybe flying geese in keeping with the animal theme.
The set of six stencils is included plus notes on the cutting sizes of the patches.
This is a project waiting to be finished. Everything you need apart from fabric is here!
Size of the finished block is 9" x 6.5" How big it ends up is up to you!
by Sheila Wilkinson.

Kimonos for a King
...or a queen? Originally made for a quilt for her granddaughter, Diane Blackmore changed her mind and made something else instead. Although she found these pretty little blocks time consuming, she thought they might make a part of a larger quilt for someone. They were foundation pieced on paper. The papers with numbering of pieces are still attached if you would like to make more! Wadding or backing does not come with them, hence the reduced price of just £15.00 plus postage.

On the High Seas
This began as a block trimming. The scraps were put on fusible fleece, covered with organza and then machine embroidered. Designs were machine appliquéd and embroidered.
This was an example for a "use the scraps" workshop.
Eleanor Williams has led workshops for her local quilt group and she used to sell quilts and quilted items at craft fairs. My main activity nowadays is to make quilts for care leavers, she said.
This exquisite design would make a really good gift for the sailors in your life!

If Music be the Food of Love
This Unfini-SHED is the sampler I made before the completed wallhanging which was displayed at the National Quilt Museum, Paducah, USA in 2022 and then went on tour.
It was also on display at the Grosvenor Malvern Show, this year, and won Third Prize in the Small Wall-hangings section.

A Sampler
This is a sample made as a try out for a wholecloth quilt. I used a sit down long arm quilting machine and needed to practise so that I could achieve even stitches. To help with placement of the quilting, I attached strips of fabric together so that the seams would help to divide the pattern, and I also wanted a free flowing design. I was surprised how symmetrical the design was when I had finished! The first time I quilted the outer borders I used a spiral shape but decided it was distracting and made the piece much too patterned. This was taken out and in its place simple wavy lines were quilted which had a calming effect on the whole piece. If you look carefully there are tiny stitch holes where the spirals were. But that is the whole point of sampling. I later used the technique on a strippy quilt, and added hand big stitch quilting to create more surface interest.

Breakdown!
I love Breakdown printing - I learned many years ago with Leslie Morgan of C2C and did a lot of different prints with this particular design.
This was printed on to heavy Lutradur and then machined very simply.
It needs more work but I am still very fond of this design and the technique and hope to do some new explorations next year! From Khurshid Bamboat, this exquisite little piece would look very stylish on your wall.
12.25" x 8.5"
Thirty Something
I wanted to experiment using letters and numbers on a screen and to see what result I would get by using not cotton but a satin viscose which is very shiny and slippery! The number 30 is quite visible in parts and slightly faded in other areas which was deliberate. It has been machined around the numbers as well. Made by Khurshid Bamboat. A beautiful piece of work!

In the Beginning....

Bloomfield Challenge
This challenged each of the Special Interest Groups to ask their members to produce a piece of work based on an historical coverlet chosen from The Guild Collection by the Quilt Study Group. Each SIG chose the size required but members took inspiration from the Bloomfield Coverlet which had been made following the death of a child and included many different techniques.
Contemporary Group "You are Worth More"
My contemporary group challenge is an art quilt that drew on the fact that the Bloomfield coverlet was a trauma piece so I searched back in my life to when I was bullied and walked away from a job I loved and had a quiet nervous breakdown. Sewing saved me. The fabric choices are representative of my anger at being badly treated and the letters are my attempt to shore up my bruised ego.

All in a Day's Work
I made my piece to reference the daily efforts of women, including myself, to use woven textiles and stitch in their homes to provide a warm and safe environment for their family.
Woollen blanket, scraps, some mended, backed with linen and stitched with old linen and silk threads as well as cottons. One piece of old grey blanket bears the eyelet as witness to its wartime use as a door curtain. There are buttons from my grandmother's button box and these include a uniform fly button and liberty bodice buttons. I have added scraps of hand dyed blanket and coloured cotton.
Techniques used: Machine and hand sewn, Dyeing, Quilting, Appliqué, Knotting, decorative stitch.

Traditional Group "Crusader Crosses"

Welsh Reminders
Not a miniature, but a small (54cm deep by 45cm wide) piece based on the traditional Welsh design of strips and squares; 'rustic' quilting. Mostly made up of pieces bought years ago at the National Wool Museum at Felindre, Llandysull (and a few additional woollen bits). My maiden name was 'Pritchard' - ancestors from the Tenby area - so there's a tenuous connection to Welsh culture.

Hexies Rule!
Although the fabrics might look commercial prints, they are not. They are all screen printed using my own screens and then cut into different size hexagons. This may well have been the beginning of my interest in hexies (I never did hexagons when I began patchwork - surprise) but I like trying out different angles and ideas. The light coloured hexagons are using my ice dyed fabric.
Beautiful fabrics used here and a unique piece that you won't find elsewhere!

Milly Molly Mandy
Born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1941, you had to be 5 to join the library. The first book I borrowed was Milly Molly Mandy. The drawings, especially the village map, always make me smile.

It consists of 3 layers of fine cotton fabric. It was drawn with an O2 radiograph pen. It was hand stitched in DMC embroidery thread and quilting cotton. The appliqué dress is in recycled pink striped cotton.

Unfini-shed
by Gwenfai Rees Griffiths, this colourfully wonderful piece of art will make your room glow with pride! Gwenfai said, " I'm a traditionalist at heart, with no desire to replicate old quilts. I aspire to create a new look from the traditional using any technique required; invariably I finish with hand quilting. There is never a meaningful reason to any of my quilts, I make them because I want to and enjoy every aspect, from the designing to the final stitch, however long that takes. Quilting is a great outlet for creative expression.
I exhibit and compete internationally and have been fortunate enough to win several awards here and abroad. I enjoy the challenge of this; it's an excellent way to stretch designing and sewing skills.
I pass on my obsession by teaching several classes locally in North Wales and am often invited to visit groups.
The quilting design on this little wholecloth is taken from one of the carved wooden panels on my Victorian bed. I've used it several times for small wholecloths and for appliqué A4 quilts. There are some great carvings on the wardrobe as well which I've yet to use. To give it a bit more of a contemporary look I decided to use fabric from Farbstoff by Heidi Stol Weber which I bought at Festival of Quilts. Handquilted using King Tut thread and some whip stitch to emphasize the shapes.
Gwenfai has generously also gifted you, the buyer, some fabric for the binding, a label and a packet of her lovely postcards.

by Pauline Barnes
"These are genuine UFOs cut from a large quilt which I was making a few years ago after a visit to Morocco. Inspiration was the Marjorelle gardens in Marrakech, once owned by Yves St Laurent. The Quilt was named after the vivid blue colour which the original owner, artist Jacques Marjorelle, painted his villa-studio.
I worked on the quilt for weeks but couldn't quite get it to 'gel' so decided to cut it up and rearrange it, which didn't work either! It has been in a drawer ever since and I thought if I cut it up again someone might see potential in it. There are lots of exotic plants in the gardens and white painted stucco on the villa. I have used hand dyed cotton fabric, polyester sheers with free machine stitching for the greenery, and Evolon Soft, hand cut into Islamic patterns and appliquéd by machine." PaulineBarnes 2014
The photo which is attached to the back is one of many which Pauline took of the gardens and was the main inspiration for the quilt.

By Ruth Jarman, this charming little quilt says it all. Ruth has used her expertise to create a very colourful and energetic piece which will inspire and delight you when you take it home with you.

Scraps Rule!
This delightful little quilt by Katharine Guerrier will make a welcome addition to any colour scheme you have in your home.
Katharine has been making quilts and embroideries since 1980. She trained at Camberwell School of Art in London and worked for some years as a teacher. Further courses in textiles followed. Katharine's work has been featured in various magazines both British and American and in her own published books. She is a regular contributor to current local and national quilt exhibitions; most recently in 'The Festival of Quilts' from its inception up until the present day. In 2007 she hosted her own gallery space at the Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.
She is still active on the teaching circuit in the UK and in March 2007, her tenth book 'Scrap Quilt Sensation' was published by David and Charles.
Katharine's work draws on the traditional motifs of pieced patchwork, developing them to give a contemporary feel. An interest in all the Decorative Arts is the motivation which provides the incentive to enable students to create textiles which are both original and collectable.

Daisy
by Maryke Phillips
I have been a Quilters' Guild member since I learnt they existed which was when I studied for my City and Guilds. I have been obsessed with fabric, stitch, threads, felts and beads ever since. I have made a Little Gem, a pennant for patchworkers and now an unfinished. This has been the hardest to part with as it is unfinished. I so wanted to embellish it with beads around the edge which is what I usually do.
I hope if you fall in love with Daisy you will enjoy it, love it, stroke it and place it where you can see it. It will be good therapy for you and will raise money for the Quilters' Guild to continue their sterling work.
I was inspired to make Daisy using techniques I use in my fabric stitch books. It was printed using a wooden Indian printing block, stitched using lazy daisy stitch using variegated hand dyed threads, embellished with shisha mirrors and stitch on hand dyed felt

Commercial cottons used in a variety of appliqué styles, both hand and machine."
